Christopher Columbus Stubbs
Harriet Hanner Stephens

Christopher Columbus Stubbs was born August 3, 1834 in Madison County, TN. He died in the Confederate Army July 13, 1863 on the Cache River in Monroe County, AR. He married Harriet Hanner Stephens, daughter of Benjamin C. and Elizabeth Stephens, in 1858 in Missouri, probably Wright County. Harriet died March 22, 1899 in Texas County Missouri. Harriet never remarried after Christopher Columbus' death, and it is said that she always wore black.

Christopher and Harriet had two children:

Christopher Columbus Stubbs enlisted in the Confederate Army Aug 4, 1862 in W. 0. Coleman's Regiment Missouri Cavalry at Alton, Oregon Co, MO, for 3 years. Three of his brothers also enlisted in Coleman's Regiment at the same time and place. He died Jul 13, 1863 during the Confederate retreat after the Battle of Helena, AR, whether from wounds or illness is not known.

Following is a summary of Christopher Columbus' Civil War record:

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS STUBBS Civil War Record (Confederate) From File at National Archives and Records at The Library of The State Historical Society of Missouri Christopher Columbus Stubbs enlisted 4 Aug 1862, W. 0. Coleman's Regiment Missouri Cavalry (CSA) in Oregon Co, MO, for 3 years. Coleman's Reg't Mo Cav was dismounted and its troops were combined with Steen's Regiment Missouri Infantry (CSA) on 19 Sep 1862. Earliest remaining muster roll on which Christopher Columbus appears is that of Co C, Steen's Reg't Mo Inf, undated, for the period 1 Feb-31 Oct 1862. It contains the following notation concerning Christopher Columbus: "Private in cavalry 1 month 15 days. Private in infantry 1 month 12 days." He appears on Co C, Steen's Reg't Mo Inf muster roll for 19 Sep-31 Dec 1862: "Absent. Nurse in Prairie Grove Hospital Dec 7. Nurse in Cain Hill Hospital Dec. 7th." (He was detailed as a nurse on the day of the Battle of Prairie Grove, AR, and may very well have volunteered for such duty to attend his brother Thomas Benton Stubbs who was wounded in the battle. When the Confederates fell back from Prairie Grove, many of their wounded were evacuated to Cane Hill.) Christopher Columbus Stubbs next appears on muster rolls of Co C, 10th Regiment Missouri Infantry for Mar-Apr 1863, "Present. Last paid by Monroe, Feb. 28, 1863;" then for 30 Apr-31 Aug 1863, "Last paid by Maj. Monroe, 30 Apr, 1863. Died Near Cash River, at private house, July 13, 1863." He may have been wounded at the Battle of Helena, AR, on 4 Jul, and succumbed 9 days later. Two of his brothers, James Knox Polk Stubbs and Doctor Benjamin Franklin Stubbs, of the same company, were captured by the Union forces at the Battle of Helena.) Christopher Columbus was a private from the time of his enlistment until his death. It is not known whether his grave is marked. Probably it is not.
