Family notes indicate that Marshall died of a broken heart at age 23 after the death of his wife during childbirth. Jesse Thomas Stubbs, Marshall's father gained guardianship of orphaned Martha Ann. By 1870, Thomas Benton, brother of Marshall, had assumed the guardianship of Martha Ann Stubbs.
